Located on West 26th Street in Chelsea, the project occupies a space directly south of Hudson Yards. The primary gallery location is a short walk away, and at times guests and personnel travel between the two spaces. The client desired a modern space that could serve as a workplace for gallery employees and a location for private viewings.
The existing architecture set the terms: white walls, concrete floors, and large windows with northern exposure create a contemporary atmosphere and character. The linear geometry of the mullions runs through the space, complemented by carefully selected furnishings with subtle curves. Guests are encouraged to enjoy the viewing room from the provided seating area, which includes an Andrée Putman sofa and a pair of vintage French armchairs with woven cane details. In the staff areas, the same attention carries through. Within the conference room a custom natural oak table with a matte finish is surrounded by chairs designed by Eileen Gray. The result is a workspace that takes art seriously without announcing it.
